A condition that affects children between the ages of 10 and 13 years, characterised by pain in one or both heels while walking. An overuse syndrome in which the growth plate of the heel can become slightly displaced, causing pain.

Symptoms & causes:

  • some children are more prone to this than others. A pre-disposition combined with sport, especially on a hard surface increases risk
  • a pronated foot & tight calf muscles are common contributing factors
  • pain in one or both heels when running & walking
  • pain that is localised to the point of the heel where the tendo-achilles inserts into the calcaneus (heel bone)
  • tenderness to deep pressure
  • pain subsides when walking on toes
